The mission of the Division of Graduate Studies and Research is to provide advanced degree programs and professional development for postgraduate students in key areas of engineering, humanities, social sciences and science; to carry out scholarly research that will sustain the degree programs, support the needs of the Canadian Forces, and create a climate of intellectual ferment at the College.

The programs of Graduate Studies at RMC are open to commissioned and non-commissioned officers of the Canadian Armed Forces, Regular and Reserves and to civilians who are either Canadian citizens or permanent residents. International students may also be admitted on a case-by-case basis.

RMC offers only graduate programs that fully meet the appraisal standards of the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies.

The institutional philosophy of RMC is predicated on limiting the number of programs and maintaining its standards to be among the best.

To meet our mission, extensive ties have been established and maintained with other government agencies, industry, and academia inside and outside Canada. The laboratories of the Division rank among the best in Canada and some are unique facilities nowhere else available in this country.

The Faculty is heavily engaged in research, creating annually some 600 refereed publications and books. Their participation on the national and international stages as recognized experts in their field is evidenced by the large numbers of invited papers and lectures that they give in a wide range of venues.

On average, each permanent faculty member attracts $115K per year of research grants or contracts from sources outside of the core budget of the College, including funds from NSERC, SSHRC, CFI, DRDC, and others.

The Division has become an intellectual crossroads where strong basic research underpins an extensive program of research and development to serve our sponsors in the DND. Faculty and students at RMC enjoy full academic freedom, but also exhibit a strong interest in defence-related problems.
