Welcome to the Department of Applied Military Science (AMS)
Department of Applied Military Science (AMS)
The Department of Applied Military Science (AMS) in Kingston, Ontario is a component of the Royal Military College and its primary purpose is to support the Canadian Forces (CF) by developing Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) to be key players in the Capability Development Process. To meet its mandate, AMS offers two programs, the Land Force Technical Staff Programme (LFTSP), and the Army's Technical Warrant Officers (ATWO) Programme.
All programs involve rigorous academic as well as practical military components and are focused on producing competent Capability Development Officers and NCOs that have a broad base of knowledge in science, technology and management, and who have the ability to apply that knowledge within a team environment to enhance the capabilities of the Canadian Forces.
The success of AMS in preparing students to meet the challenges of developing the future CF is clearly evident by the number of high-profile graduates from this type of programme, whom are currently serving in key command and staff positions. It should be noted that the importance of AMS to the future of the CF extends beyond its ability to train the Officer Corps. As Senior NCOs start to take on greater roles within the development process they will need more advanced skill sets to be relevant members of the Defence Team.
The number of high-profile graduates that have had the education and training provided by AMS is no coincidence. The increasing sophistication and complexity of military operations makes it necessary to have skilled commanders and staff that can effectively use, maintain and influence the acquisition of the right defence resources. The department provides these advanced skills and refers to the process as, giving officers and Senior NCOs “the AMS Advantage.”
In essence, “the AMS Advantage” provides CF members with the skills and knowledge needed by tomorrow’s leaders today. It does this by producing graduates that understand the impact and benefits of new capabilities on doctrine & operational concepts so they can play a key role in developing the CF of tomorrow.
